Smart Patient Courses

Some things are best self-managed - like your health

“The clinician was the driving force in the 20th century, [but] the patient will be the driving force in the 21st century.”
"Knowledge [of what works] will become the enemy of disease."
Sir Muir Gray, Director of Clinical Knowledge of the UK’s NHS

50% of populations in developed countries now suffer from one or more chronic conditions and 7 out of 10 people will die early from a chronic condition - and this figure is set to rise. Those affected are heading down a pathway of greater drug-dependency, greater disabilities, loss of quality of life, and many will require long-term care.

In spite of medical advances, we are no further forward in curing chronic disease and we can no longer trust that the medical system can even help us get us to where we want to be. So the responsibility will ultimately fall to the patient to determine what's going to work best for them in their individual circumstances and which health practitioner is most aligned to helping them get to where they want to go.

In this age of information overload, this is a mine-field both for the medically trained and the medically untrained, as no-one knows what works, or what will give the best clinical outcome for the individual patient.

The good news is that you don't have to be a medical expert to be a smart patient and by using the Smart Patient Journey Roadmap you will be able to assess what is most value to you from mainstream and alternative health and wellbeing fraternities, based on your own circumstances, criteria, risks and preferences and it can indicate if any of the offerings can help you get to where you'd like to be in terms of personal health outcomes and your aspirations.

Here is a quote from one of my patients, in her early 20s, who had a chronic condition and needed to make some difficult decisions in the face of immense medical pressure and adversity. Happily, she got the outcome she needed and by using the Smart Patient Roadmap she was able to express herself clearly to the medical profession and gain their confidence in her choices.

"The road map teaches you how to make informed decisions about your health with confidence. It allows you to take a step back and look at all your options and their outcomes to see if they match up with your personal desired endpoint. It gives you the courage to ask your practitioner questions so that you can take the reins of your life and no longer live in the dark. By weighing up the pros and cons of each treatment, it makes it easier to choose which one suits you and enables you to tailor your own pathway dependent on your lifestyle and values."     ER, QLD, Australia
